Can You buy the same size in the Adidas VL Court as You wear in the Samba?

adidas-vl-court-vs-samba-size-comparison

Does the Adidas VL Court run bigger than the Samba?

Yes. The Adidas VL Court feels roomier than the Samba, especially through the toe box and forefoot. While the overall length is similar, the Samba has a snugger, lower-profile fit.

Should you buy the same size?

  • If you wear the Samba true to size: Buy the same size in the VL Court. It will simply feel roomier.
  • If you size up in the Samba because of the narrow fit: You can likely go back to your true size in the VL Court.

My Sizes

  • Adidas Samba: US 9.5
  • Adidas VL Court: US 9

Wide Feet

The VL Court is the better choice. Its roomier forefoot makes it more comfortable for wider feet, while the Samba often requires sizing up.

Narrow Feet

The Samba is the better choice. Its slimmer shape wraps the foot more securely and provides a more locked-in feel.

Now, the Samba gets compared with a lot more than just the VL Court. If you’re also curious how it fits next to the Gazelle, Campus, and Spezial, I’ve worn all four and put everything I found into one easy comparison. It’s a handy guide if you’re still deciding which Adidas classic is the best fit for your feet.

Why I Wear Different Sizes

I own both shoes, but I don’t buy them in the same size.

adidas-samba-size-guide

With the Samba, a US 9 feels too close around the front of my foot. The shoe hugs my forefoot more than I’d like, so after trying both sizes, I settled on a US 9.5, which gives my toes enough room.

adidas-vl-court-sizing

The VL Court doesn’t give me that problem. The front of the shoe feels more open, so my foot settles in naturally without any pressure along the sides. A US 9 gives me the fit I’m looking for, and I never felt the need to size up.

That’s why my recommendation changes between the two. Even though they’re similar-looking Adidas sneakers, they don’t create the same amount of space around my foot, so the size that works best for me isn’t the same.

If you think the Samba is the one for you, I’ve also put together a complete guide covering Samba sizing, including the size I wear, who should size up, and what to expect if you have wider feet.

Which Shoe Runs Bigger?

adidas-vl-court-vs-samba-which-shoe-runs-bigger

I’d point them to the Adidas VL Court without much hesitation.

The overall length between the two is fairly close, so I don’t think length is what separates them. What stood out to me was how much room each shoe gives your foot after you lace it up.

The Samba feels compact from the moment I put it on. My toes sit closer to the front, the sides of the shoe wrap around my forefoot, and there’s very little unused space inside. It creates a secure fit, but it’s also the reason I go up to a US 9.5.

The VL Court immediately feels a bit more accommodating. My foot has a little more freedom to move, especially around the front of the shoe, and nothing feels compressed. I don’t get the sensation that my toes are pushing against the upper or that the sides are squeezing my forefoot.

That’s why I don’t think the VL Court runs bigger because it’s longer. It feels bigger because the shoe has more internal volume.

There’s simply more room for your foot throughout the forefoot and midfoot, which makes the fit noticeably more relaxed.

If you already wear the Samba in your true size and like its close-fitting feel, I’d stick with the same size in the VL Court and expect a roomier fit.

If you’re like me and had to size up in the Samba, I’d go back to your true size in the VL Court. The extra space built into the shoe makes that half-size adjustment unnecessary.

Toe Box Comparison

Width

With the Samba, the sides of the toe box sit much closer to my foot. It isn’t painfully narrow, but I can always tell the shoe was designed with a slimmer profile.

The VL Court gives my toes noticeably more room to spread. I don’t feel any pressure along the outside of my forefoot, and my US 9 already provides the space I was looking for.

Height

The difference isn’t just side-to-side space. There’s also more room above my toes in the VL Court.

The Samba has a flatter toe box, so the upper sits closer to the top of my foot. It creates a sleek look, but it also contributes to the snug fit.

The VL Court doesn’t press down as much. My toes have a little extra breathing room, which makes the shoe feel comfortable from the first wear.

The Spezial sits somewhere between the Samba and Gazelle in terms of fit. I go into much more detail in my complete Spezial sizing guide.

Shape

These shoes were designed with different priorities.

The Samba has a long, tapered front that gives it its unmistakable silhouette. The shape follows the foot closely, especially toward the toe.

The VL Court is more rounded at the front. That extra width isn’t dramatic, but it’s enough to make the shoe feel more forgiving during everyday wear.

If your toes like a bit of personal space, the VL Court is the easier shoe to live with.

Midfoot Fit

adidas-samba-vs-vl-court-midfoot-fit

The biggest difference after the toe box is how each shoe holds the middle of your foot.

The Samba wraps around my midfoot almost immediately. Even before I tighten the laces, the shoe already feels connected to my foot.

Small adjustments to the laces make a noticeable difference, so it’s easy to fine-tune the fit until it feels secure.

The VL Court is a bit more relaxed through the middle. I still get enough support for everyday walking, but the upper doesn’t hug my foot in the same way. I can lace it comfortably without feeling any pressure across the top of my foot.

That gives each shoe a different personality. The Samba feels more precise and supportive, while the VL Court prioritizes comfort and freedom of movement.

Heel Lockdown

adidas-samba-vs-vl-court-heel-lockdown-comparison

The Samba keeps my heel planted better than the VL Court.

As soon as I start walking, I notice very little movement at the back of the shoe. My heel stays in place, so each step feels controlled and predictable.

I don’t have to pull the laces especially tight to get that secure fit because the shape of the heel already does most of the work.

The VL Court is still stable, but it doesn’t hold my heel as firmly. There’s a little more freedom at the back of the shoe, which actually suits its relaxed character.

I never felt like my heel was slipping out, but I was more aware that my foot could move naturally inside the shoe.

That difference becomes more noticeable if you spend a full day on your feet. The Samba always feels a little more connected, while the VL Court feels easier and less restrictive.

Neither approach is better for everyone. It simply depends on whether you prefer a locked-in fit or a more casual walking experience.

How They Feel On Foot

The Samba always reminds me of its football roots. It sits close to my foot, responds well when I change direction, and gives me a confident, planted feeling with every step.

The sole is firmer than the VL Court’s, so the ride feels more direct. I wouldn’t describe it as uncomfortable, but it definitely favors stability over softness.

From the first few steps, the VL Court feels more laid-back. The extra room around my foot, combined with the softer cushioning, makes it easy to forget I’m even wearing it.

Nothing feels tight or demanding, and I don’t find myself thinking about adjusting the laces or breaking the shoe in.

After wearing both, I reach for them for different reasons.

If I want a sneaker that feels secure, structured, and closely follows my foot, I pick the Samba.

If I’m heading out for a long day of casual walking or simply want the more comfortable option, I almost always reach for the VL Court instead. It doesn’t feel quite as connected to my foot, but that’s exactly what makes it so easy to wear for hours.

Which Is Better for Wide Feet?

vl-court-vs-adidas-samba-which-shoe-fitseach-foot-shape

Your foot shape plays a big role in deciding between these two sneakers.

Narrow Feet

I’d lean towards the Adidas Samba.

Its slimmer shape does a better job of holding a narrow foot in place, so the fit feels secure without having to overtighten the laces.

Normal Feet

Both shoes work well.

If you like a closer, more supportive fit, go with the Samba. If comfort is your priority, the VL Court is the easier shoe to wear all day.

Slightly Wide Feet

This is where I fall.

The VL Court fits my feet much better in my true size. The Samba isn’t uncomfortable, but I have to go up half a size to get the amount of room I like across the forefoot.

Wide Feet

The VL Court is the clear winner.

Its roomier toe box and more forgiving upper make it a much better option if you often struggle with narrow shoes. The Samba can still work, but many people with wide feet will probably be happier sizing up or choosing the VL Court instead.

Who Should Buy the Adidas Samba?

who-should-buy-adidas-vl-court-and-adidas-samba

The Samba is a great choice if…

  • You like a snug, secure fit.
  • You prefer your shoes to wrap closely around your foot.
  • You enjoy a firmer, more connected walking feel.
  • You have narrow or average-width feet.
  • You want the classic football-inspired Samba silhouette.

Who Should Buy the Adidas VL Court?

The VL Court makes more sense if…

  • Comfort comes before a locked-in fit.
  • You have slightly wide or wide feet.
  • You like a roomier toe box.
  • You spend a lot of time walking in your sneakers.
  • You’re looking for a more affordable alternative to the Samba.

Adidas VL Court vs Samba Sizing – Final Verdict

Both sneakers deserve a place in Adidas’ lineup, but they appeal to different people.

I still prefer the Samba.

After sizing up to a US 9.5, it feels secure yet still comfortable. I like how closely it follows my foot, especially when I’m walking for long periods. It has a more precise fit, and that’s something I always appreciate.

The VL Court is the pair I reach for when comfort comes first. The toe box gives my forefoot more freedom, the cushioning feels softer, and I never think about needing extra break-in time. I can put it on and head out without giving the fit a second thought.

If someone asked me which shoe has the better fit, I’d still choose the Samba.

If they asked which shoe I’d recommend to the average person, especially someone with slightly wide or wide feet, I’d probably recommend the VL Court instead.

It’s simply the easier shoe to wear, and I think more people will feel comfortable in it from day one.

Here are my winners…

adidas-vl-court-vs-adidas-samba-size-comparison

🏆 Best Overall Fit: Adidas Samba

If I could only choose one based purely on fit, I’d still pick the Adidas Samba.

Once I size up half a size, it feels almost tailor-made for my feet. I like the way it follows my foot when I walk, and I never feel like I’m sliding around inside the shoe. It has the kind of fit that disappears because everything feels exactly where it should.

🏆 Best for Wide Feet: Adidas VL Court

The VL Court wins this category quite comfortably.

My forefoot has noticeably more room, and I don’t have to size up just to stay comfortable. If your feet are even slightly wider than average, the VL Court is the shoe I’d recommend first.

🏆 Best Heel Lockdown: Adidas Samba

The Samba keeps my heel in place better.

Even with the laces tied normally, the back of the shoe feels secure. I don’t notice much movement while walking, and that gives the shoe a more confident feel than the VL Court.

🏆 Roomiest Toe Box: Adidas VL Court

This was one of the easiest categories to judge.

The toe box gives my toes more freedom, both across the width and over the top of my foot. It never feels cramped, even in my true size.

🏆 Best Midfoot Fit: Adidas Samba

This is one of the reasons I enjoy wearing the Samba so much.

The midfoot hugs my foot naturally without becoming uncomfortable. I don’t need to pull the laces especially tight because the shoe already feels secure.

🏆 Most Beginner-Friendly Fit: Adidas VL Court

If you’ve never owned either model before, I’d suggest starting with the VL Court.

It works well for more foot shapes, and sizing is much less complicated. Most people can buy their normal size and feel comfortable straight away.

🏆 Best Stability: Adidas Samba

The Samba feels more planted under my feet.

Whether I’m walking through town or standing for long periods, my foot stays in place. That makes the shoe feel more stable and a little more supportive than the VL Court.

🏆 Best Everyday Comfort: Adidas VL Court

This is the pair I reach for when comfort is my priority.

The softer feel and roomier fit make it easy to wear for hours. I never catch myself thinking about the fit because nothing feels tight or restrictive, and that’s exactly what I want from an everyday sneaker.

Adidas VL Court vs Samba Sizing FAQs

Does the Adidas VL Court run bigger than the Samba?

Yes. The Adidas VL Court feels a bit roomier than the Samba, particularly around the toe box and forefoot. The overall length is similar, but the VL Court provides more internal space, which is why it feels more forgiving.

Do Adidas VL Courts run big or small?

I think the VL Court fits true to size for most people. It doesn’t feel unusually long or short. The fit is relaxed without being oversized, so I’d recommend starting with your normal Adidas size.

Are the Adidas VL Court and Samba the same in terms of sizing?

No.

Although they have a similar look, they fit quite differently. The Samba has a slimmer toe box, a closer-fitting midfoot, and a more secure heel. The VL Court feels roomier throughout the front of the shoe, so many people who size up in the Samba can comfortably wear their true size in the VL Court.

Should I size up or down in the Adidas Samba?

That depends on your foot shape.

If you have narrow feet, your normal size will usually work well. If you have normal, slightly wide, or wide feet, I’d recommend trying half a size up. That’s what worked best for me because it gave my forefoot the extra room it needed without making the shoe feel loose.

Do Adidas court shoes fit true to size?

Most Adidas court-style sneakers, including the VL Court, fit true to size. The Samba is one of the exceptions because its slimmer shape makes it feel tighter than many other Adidas casual models.

Is Adidas Samba sizing accurate?

Yes, but only if you understand the type of fit it’s designed to have.

The Samba isn’t supposed to feel roomy. It’s built with a close-fitting, football-inspired shape, so many people are surprised by how snug it feels the first time they try it on.

Why are Adidas Sambas so tight?

The fit comes from the design rather than poor sizing. The Samba has a narrow toe box, a low-profile upper, and a snug midfoot. All of those features help create its classic silhouette, but they also make the shoe feel tighter than models like the Gazelle, Campus, Spezial, or VL Court.

Is the VL Court good for wide feet?

Yes.

Between these two sneakers, I’d recommend the VL Court for anyone with slightly wide or wide feet. The forefoot offers more room, the upper feels less restrictive, and I didn’t feel the need to size up for comfort.

Do the Samba and VL Court get looser over time?

Yes, but only to a certain extent.

Both shoes become more comfortable as the upper softens, especially around the forefoot. However, don’t expect either model to stretch by half a size.

If the shoe already feels painfully tight when you first try it on, it’s usually better to choose a different size rather than hoping it will stretch enough during the break-in period.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve made it this far, you probably already know which one suits you better.

Go for the Adidas Samba if you enjoy a snug, secure fit and don’t mind sizing up half a size to get it. That’s the option I personally prefer because it feels more connected to my foot once I have the right size.

Choose the Adidas VL Court if you’d rather keep things simple. Buy your normal size, lace them up, and you’re good to go. The extra room makes them feel comfortable straight away, especially if your feet aren’t particularly narrow.

Neither shoe is objectively better. They just solve different problems.

I’d happily wear either pair, but not for the same reason.
