Is Italian Shoe Size the Same as European Shoe Size?

Often, yes, but not always. Many Italian brands use standard European numbering, so an IT 42 may also be listed as EU 42.

Some brands use their own sizing system as well. Ferragamo, Prada, and Giorgio Armani are examples in the charts above. That’s why the brand’s own chart should take priority over a general IT-to-US conversion.

Should I Use the Italian Size or My Foot Length?

If the brand gives you a foot-length measurement, use it to check the size rather than relying on the Italian-to-US conversion alone.

Measure both feet, use the longer measurement, then compare it with the brand’s own chart. If you don’t know your foot length yet, follow my step-by-step guide to measuring your feet at home.

This is also consistent with Brannock’s fitting instructions, which recommend measuring both feet and fitting to the larger foot.

Just make sure you’re comparing your measurement with the same brand’s chart. For example, Prada lists a 25.3 cm men’s foot as IT 40 / US 7, while Giorgio Armani lists 25.0 cm as IT 40 / US 7 and 25.5 cm as IT 40.5 / US 7.5. So even with a similar foot measurement, you shouldn’t take the Italian size from one brand’s chart and automatically apply it to another.

If the brand doesn’t publish foot length, use its official IT-to-US conversion. If neither is available, use the general conversion charts in this guide as a starting point.

How Do I Convert My US Shoe Size to Italian Sizing?

If you know your US size, use the men’s or women’s conversion separately, since the same US size converts differently.

For example, a US men’s 9 is generally around IT 42, while a US women’s 9 is around IT 39. Use the chart below as a general guide, or the brand-specific charts above if you know the manufacturer.

What If My Italian Shoe Size Falls Between Two US Sizes?

If your Italian size converts to two possible US sizes, don’t automatically choose the larger one. First check whether the brand publishes its own US conversion.

For example, the general men’s chart puts IT 42 around US 8.5–9, but several brand charts give a specific conversion instead. Bottega Veneta lists IT 42 as US 9, while Gucci lists IT 42 as US 8.5.

If the brand also gives foot length, compare that with your measured foot. I’d use the general conversion range only when better brand-specific information isn’t available.

Why Does My Italian Shoe Size Convert Differently Depending on the Brand?

Because there isn’t one universal Italian-to-US conversion that every shoe company follows.

You can see this directly in the brand charts. Gucci lists IT 42 as US men’s 8.5, while Bottega Veneta lists IT 42 as US men’s 9.

Some manufacturers also use their own sizing alongside Italian or European sizing. Prada, for example, separates the Italy size from the Prada size in its men’s chart.

That’s why I wouldn’t take an IT-to-US conversion from one Italian brand and apply it to another.

Why Do Two Italian Shoes With the Same Size Have Different Foot-Length Measurements?

Because the number printed on the shoe doesn’t guarantee that every manufacturer, or even every shoe category from the same manufacturer, will associate it with exactly the same foot length.

Dolce & Gabbana is a good example. Its men’s formal and sneaker charts both convert EU/IT 39.5 to US 6.5, but the formal chart gives a foot length of 24.9 cm, while the sneaker chart gives 24.7 cm.

So don’t build a universal rule such as “IT 39.5 always equals a 24.9 cm foot.” Use the measurements from the chart for the brand and shoe category you’re actually buying.

What Should I Do If the Shoe Box, Shoe Label, and Website Show Different Sizes?

First, check which sizing system each number represents. A product can show an Italian or European size on the shoe while a retailer displays the corresponding US size on its website.

Also watch for brands with their own sizing systems. With Prada men’s shoes, for example, Italy 42, Prada 8, and US 9 all appear on the same conversion row.

So three different numbers don’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Before ordering or returning the shoes, identify whether each number is IT/EU, US, or the brand’s own size.

Can I Use My Nike, Adidas, or New Balance Size to Choose an Italian Shoe Size?

You can use your usual sneaker size as a starting point, but I wouldn’t convert it directly and assume the Italian shoe will fit the same way.

If you’re normally a US 9, like me, for example, the general men’s chart puts you around IT 42, but the brand-specific conversion may differ.

Start with your usual US size, find its equivalent on the Italian brand’s own chart, then check your foot length if the manufacturer supplies measurements. That’s more reliable than assuming your Nike US 9 automatically means the same Italian size at every brand.

What If the Italian Brand Doesn’t List My Exact US Size?

Don’t create a half-size conversion that the manufacturer doesn’t actually list.

Check whether the brand gives foot-length measurements and use those to identify the closest appropriate size. Also look at the actual sizes the brand makes, because not every Italian brand follows the same half-size pattern.

For example, Golden Goose’s chart in this guide moves through whole Italian sizes, while Bottega Veneta lists half sizes through much of its range.

If you’re between the available sizes and the brand doesn’t provide enough information to choose confidently, I wouldn’t automatically size up. Width, shoe shape, foot shape, and the particular model can affect which size works better.

Why Do Some Italian Shoe Charts Use Half Sizes While Others Don’t?

Because half-size availability is determined by the brand’s own sizing system and size range. You shouldn’t assume that every Italian brand makes an IT 40.5 just because another one does.

Bottega Veneta’s chart, for example, includes sizes such as 40, 40.5, 41, 41.5, and 42. Golden Goose’s chart shown in this guide instead moves from IT 39 to 40 to 41 to 42.

If your usual conversion lands between two sizes, check what that specific brand actually sells and use its foot-length information when available rather than inventing a half size that isn’t on its chart.

If you don’t know the brand, use the general charts or the calculator as a starting point. But when you’re buying from Gucci, Prada, Tod’s, Dolce & Gabbana, or another brand covered above, I’d use that brand’s conversion instead.
