This isn’t a comeback. It’s a victory lap.
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re already a New Balance fan. And if I asked you to name your favorite New Balance model of all time, you’d probably hesitate.
There are just too many great ones. Still, a few pairs sit in a different category altogether, and the New Balance 992 is absolutely one of them.
Now that New Balance is bringing the 992 back in a big way, the biggest question is the same as always: New Balance 992 sizing.
How does the 992 fit? Do they run big or small? Should you go true to size or size down?
In this sizing guide, I’m breaking down exactly how the 992 fits, based on real wear and direct comparisons, so you know what to expect before buying your pair.
New Balance 992 Sizing – How They Really Fit

The New Balance 992 is one of those models that looks structured and supportive, but once you put it on, it feels noticeably roomier than you might expect.
But it does fit big.
From a sizing standpoint, my feet measure as a true size 9, slightly on the wider side. I’ve tried the 992 both true to size and half a size down, and the difference is very clear.

My Experience: True Size vs Half Size Down
When I go true to size (9), the shoe feels comfortable, but definitely on the relaxed side. There’s extra room in the toe box, and more importantly, I notice heel slippage.
My foot doesn’t feel locked in, and I can feel some movement, especially at the back. If you like a looser, relaxed fit or just want more breathing room, true to size can still work, but it’s not my preference.
When I go half a size down, the fit feels much more dialed in. The length feels controlled, the heel stays put, and the shoe feels comfortably snug.
Even with slightly wider feet, I don’t get pressure points or pinching. For me, this is where the 992 really shines.
Because of that, this is one of the few New Balance models where I consistently prefer sizing down.
Overall, the 992 fits generously through the toe box, and the heel area especially feels loose if you go true to size. That’s why many people, myself included, end up sizing down half a size for a cleaner, more secure fit.
That said, it really comes down to what you like:
- If you prefer a snug, one-to-one fit, go half a size down.
- If you like a roomier feel or have very wide feet, go true to size.

Width and Toe Box Feel
The 992 is very wide-foot friendly. Even going half a size down, the toe box remains forgiving. Width has never been an issue for me in this model, and I wouldn’t size up just for width alone.
If you have narrow, normal, or slightly wide feet, the shoe will still feel spacious. That built-in room is part of the 992’s comfort, but it’s also why sizing down works so well for many people.

How the 992 Fits Compared to Other Models
For reference, I also go half a size down in other Made in USA New Balance models like:
- 993
- Most of the 990 series (V3, V4, V5, V6)
On the other hand, I usually stay true to size in many Made in Asia or UK models, such as:
Compared to those, the 992 feels noticeably roomier, especially in the heel.
Even when comparing across brands, the sizing feels familiar. I wear a size 9 in Nike models like the Air Max 1, Air Max 90, Air Jordan 1 High, Air Jordan 3, and the Zoom Vomero 5, and the 2002R lines up well with those in terms of length.

New Balance 992 Collabs – Do They Fit the Same?
For the most part, 992 collaborations fit the same as the regular New Balance 992, so you don’t need to overthink sizing just because it’s a collab.
That applies to pairs like:
- Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 992
- Todd Snyder x New Balance 992
- Kith x New Balance 992
- Concepts x New Balance 992
- JJJJound x New Balance 992
- Nice Kicks x Amoeba x New Balance 992
- DTLR x New Balance 992
- Teddy Santis x New Balance 992
If you already know your 992 size, stick with it. These collabs don’t change the last or overall fit in any meaningful way.
If you’ve never worn a 992 before, keep in mind that the model runs a bit roomy. Assuming you don’t have very wide feet, going half a size down is still the safer starting point, even with collabs.

Action Bronson x New Balance 992 (Fit Notes)
The Action Bronson 992 is the one exception where the fit felt slightly different to me.
In my pair, I noticed a bit of pressure around the ball of my foot, right where the laces start. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it did feel a touch more snug than a typical 992.
Here’s how I’d approach sizing on this one:
- Narrow to normal width feet → half size down still works
- Wider feet → true to size may feel better
- If you already know your regular 992 size → stick with it unless you’re very sensitive to forefoot pressure
Overall, even with the Bronson pair, the difference is subtle. It doesn’t dramatically change how the shoe fits, but it’s worth noting if you’re between sizes or have wider feet.

How to Measure Your Feet for the New Balance 992
Because the New Balance 992 runs a bit roomy, getting your true measurements first makes sizing decisions much easier.
1. Try Them On in Person (Best Option)
If you can find the 992 in-store, this is always the easiest way to dial in your size.
When trying them on:
- Wear the socks you actually plan to wear
- Stand up and walk around, don’t just sit
- Pay attention to heel movement and toe space
If the heel feels loose or your foot slides around, that’s usually a sign you may want to go half a size down. If the shoe feels comfortably snug without pressure, you’re in the right size.
2. Get Professionally Measured

If trying them on isn’t possible, getting measured in-store is the next best option.
A proper fitter can:
- Measure both foot length and width
- Tell you whether your foot runs narrow, standard, or wide
- Help you decide if sizing down makes sense for a roomy model like the 992
- This is especially helpful if you’re between sizes.
3. Use a Brannock Device Correctly

If you have access to a Brannock device, make sure you’re using it the right way:
- Stand up, not seated
- Place your heel fully back in the cup
- Put full weight on your foot
- Measure both feet and use the larger one
- The size you get here is your true size. From there:
- Go true to size for a relaxed fit
- Consider half a size down for a snugger, more locked-in feel in the 992

4. Measure Your Feet at Home
If you’re measuring at home, this method works well:
What you’ll need:
- Paper
- Pen
- Ruler or tape measure
- Wall
Steps:

- Place the paper on the floor against a wall
- Wear the socks you plan to wear with the 992
- Stand with your heel touching the wall
- Put full weight on your foot
- Mark the tip of your longest toe
- Measure from the wall to the mark
- Repeat for the other foot and use the longer measurement
- Match that measurement to New Balance’s size chart to find your true size.
Extra Tips That Matter for the 992
- Measure later in the day, when your feet are slightly swollen
- Always measure both feet
- Think about sock thickness before choosing your size
- Don’t judge fit by how the shoe looks, the 992 fits roomier than it appears
Final Sizing Advice
If you’ve never worn the New Balance 992 before, here’s the simplest way to think about sizing:
- Prefer a snug, secure, one-to-one fit → go half a size down
- Prefer a relaxed, roomy feel → stay true to size
- Wide feet → width isn’t an issue either way
- Heel slippage bothers you → size down
Most New Balance 992 collaborations fit exactly the same as the regular 992, including pairs from Joe Freshgoods, Kith, JJJJound, Concepts, Todd Snyder, Teddy Santis, and others. If you already know your 992 size, stick with it for collabs.
The one slight exception is the Action Bronson x New Balance 992, which felt a touch more snug around the ball of the foot. It’s not a drastic difference, but if you have wider feet, sticking true to size may feel more comfortable there. Narrow-to-normal-width feet can still get away with going half a size down.
Final Thoughts
The good news is that the 992 is more accessible now, especially with general release colorways. If you have the chance to try them on in person, that’s always the safest move, since fit can feel a little different depending on foot shape and how much room you personally like.
Personally, I get the best fit by going half a size down. It keeps the shoe feeling secure without sacrificing comfort. That said, if you like a more relaxed fit or just want extra room, true to size still works.
Once you dial in the length, the width takes care of itself. If you’ve worn the 992 before, I’m curious. How did you find the New Balance 992 sizing? Did you stay true to size, or did you size down?
